xix_i

Subscripts — picking one item

Read x_i as "x sub i" or "x i". A small lowered letter picks out one item: the i-th entry of a vector, or the i-th vector in a sequence.

Which of the two depends on the letter's font. xix_i (plain) is one number inside a vector; xi\mathbf{x}_i (bold) is the whole vector for token ii. Two subscripts pick an entry of a matrix: MijM_{ij} is the entry in row ii, column jj.

By habit, ii and jj count features or positions, tt counts time steps, ll counts layers, and mm and nn are positions in RoPE. Some subscripts are names rather than counters, such as the "model" in dmodeld_{\text{model}}.

Example

M=[5729]  ⟹  M12=7M = \begin{bmatrix} 5 & 7 \\ 2 & 9 \end{bmatrix} \;\Longrightarrow\; M_{12} = 7

Row 1, column 2.
